Galeria El Carmen Grand Opening
A new gallery is opening its doors in La Antigua Guatemala today. El Carmen Galeria de Arte is hosting its “apertura” from 5:00pm to 8:00pm this evening. Art enthusiasts are invited to enjoy free cocktails while visiting with the artists whose work is being showcased at the gallery. The gallery is currently featuring portraits and landscapes as well as modern art from 22 artists, including nationally recognized artists such as Marlov Barrios, Erick Menchu, Mario Santizo, Guilliermo Maldonado, and Alejandro Urrutia.
ArteAntigua stopped by the gallery yesterday for a chat with founder and gallery Director Luis Muñoz Fuentes to learn more about El Carmen and Fuentes says his gallery will be quite the active one:
“We’re going to have a distinct exposition of each artist every month as part of a yearlong program.”
Fuentes asserts that showcasing artists is the very concept behind his gallery. But not just renowned artists. Fuentes stresses that his mission is to support artists that are still struggling to make a name for themselves:
“What is important is to give the opportunity and the space to the artists that have not received recognition within the world of art.”
Fuentes points out though that offering that opportunity is a responsibility that falls solely upon the art community.
“Lamentably we don’t have support from anyone… from the government, from nobody. But it’s a personal matter. We have the strength to one day leave a legacy to our children and our grandchildren – so that they may see the beauty that is the Guatemalan landscape, the work of the Guatemalan artists.”
