Surreal “Stamps” Between Two Seas
The presentation was a declaration of “alter-reality.” Anna Soler’s exhibition of “Contactos: Estampillas de Viajes Entre dos Mare” (Contacts: Stamps of Travels Between Two Seas) evokes a surreal sense of the typical urban and rural landscape.
“It’s an invitation [to] see the landscape through my eyes, through how I am seeing it in an unrealistic way,” Soler said.
Casa del Mango hosted the exposition, which showcased a collection of intentionally distorted, saturated photos created by using a Holga camera.
“The Holga is a camera [used]… to break the rules a little.”
Breaking the rules, Soler says, can be a relief from the never-ending pursuit of perfection.
“Too much time studying and hammering the techniques. Perhaps it’s that I want to play, make all that which isn’t a part of the professional photographic technique. Like a brea. Like a moment of relief.”
Soler says the idea behind this “surreal exposure” of urban and rural landscapes provokes her audience to consider reality in a new way.
“Incite new sentiments that maybe they never saw like this [before]… seeing the indirect landscape, or landscape of another form.”
Encouraging people to further open their minds is something Soler says she wants to promote:
“I believe it’s important to give ourselves the luxury of imagining things in another form…”
Soler, a native of Castellón, Spain but current resident of Mexico has 17 years of experience in photography. More of her work can be found at Fabricadeimagines.com.
