Exotic Dance and Music from the Middle East
Art enthusiasts in search of the exotic have the opportunity to indulge in an art that hails from the Middle East. El Sitío is hosting a belly dancing performance today, Friday, October 2 at 8:00pm. Visiones y Velos features dancer Zaina Zahesha and percussionist Susu Pampanin and is presented with the support of Artecentro Graciela Andrade de Paiz.
Zaina Zahesha is a recognized belly dancer (or Arabian dancer) that is visiting La Antigua Guatemala from the state of California, USA. Zaina has studied this genre of dance for more than 20 years. Her specialty is modern Egyptian and American cabaret style performances. She is also influenced by the great Egyptian artists Samia Gamal y Tahia Karioca. Known for her use of zils (or crótalos, small finger cymbals) she has recorded various CDs and DVDs of workshops that demonstrate the use of operating these small instruments that add much to the music and dance of the Middle East. Recently in El Paso, Texas, a news critic commented that the dance of Zaina transports her audience to Egypt and recalls the very style and quality of Samia Gamal.
In the United States, Zaina Zahesha runs her own belly dance company, “Jouweh”, which she launched in California, USA in 1996. This is the first time Zaina is visiting Guatemala to delight us with her melodious and sensual movements. And for exhibiting/showing this growing and influential sector of dance. Zaina comes accompanied with her percussionist. Susu Pampanin has studied a great variety of percussion instruments, but her talent is especially evident in his work with the bongos and rhythms of the Middle East. Susu is not only recognized for his great ability en Arabic percussion, but also she is one of the few women in this genre, and is respected by Arabic percussion for her knowledge and ability. Susu has recorded more than a dozen recordings and has her own CDs. Susu visits us from San Francisco, California and has performed throughout the U.S. and the Middle East.
