Making La Antigua Magical
Safron Mango Cardamom. Coffee Rum Walnut. Pineapple Carrot. Maple Pumpkin. Rum Avocado. These are not your average ice cream flavors and the man behind them is not your average café owner. He is an artist. He is a leader.
Need proof? Read this moving speech he recently made during a presentation with Nueva Acropolis:
History has shown us, when the world is in flux and unstable, that the right voice in the right place can move nations. Think Jesus, Thomas Paine and Ben Franklin, Simon Bolivar, and Hitler. Some good, some bad, but all strong, and each one knowing that it is individuals, not the masses, that make history. The owner of the voice that will lead Central America to greatness is here in Guatemala and needs to awaken. That person can be any one of us. Someone with the fire within to change the world, but just needing a spark to set it off.
The world has never before been as desperate for change as it is now, nor as capable of bringing it about. We are in an age of miracles, when one can communicate with the other side of the planet instantly, and yet we waste that power on downloading music and growing imaginary plants on Facebook.
With a change in our priorities everyone in this room can do something to show the world that Guatemala is more than coffee and jade. Now, buildings don’t make a city and lines on a map don’t make a country; it is the people that make them, and you are what make Antigua magical.
The people who show you their talents do so to awaken something within you, the pride of being who you are and a desire to show it. Everyone in here has a gift and should develop it, and use the powers that technology has granted us to make the rest of the world see Guatemala is ready to be counted among the first world nations and get the respect it deserves.
To learn more about how, I urge you to listen to the speakers and see some of the great things people are already doing here, and have the courage to step up and be everything you can be, and each of you be the one to show your success, not waiting for someone else to do it for you.
We can show the world we don’t need some fruit company to survive, we don’t need to go to some other country for work. The wealth of Guatemala is inside all of you just waiting for you to grab it and put it to work for you. We can’t do it overnight, but we can start now.
Alex is truly one of La Antigua’s active members of local art community who is doing much to support it and grow it.
So, support Alex by visiting his café/art gallery Sobremesa. Below a description of his La Antigua hideaway from aantiguaguatemala.com:
This little café is a combined art gallery and restaurant where several paintings of various artists can be observed hanging on the walls. The menu consists of small tapas, soups and salads. The main courses vary from sirloin medallion and mushrooms in a port reduction, sirloin stuffed with spinach and cheese, and grilled chicken Dijon. For dessert you can enjoy the mouth-watering Merlot strawberries with ice cream or the delicious cheesecake.
